A Non-Frenchie's Guide to Becoming a "Frenchie" in HK
The Ultimate 7-Day Parisian-chic Lookbook (Late Summer/Early Fall)
by Jobie Soo
Have you ever looked at a throwback picture of yourself and that god-forsaken outfit of yours just made you shiver and go WHAT ON EARTH WAS I WEARING? Yeah… we’ve all been there. I was a terrible self-proclaimed "stylist" (emphasis on the "self-proclaimed" part) back in the days... So young, so naive. That being said, I had no idea what to wear or what I was wearing 90% of the time, except the same boring outfit day after day.
The good thing is, those days are over. I've realized that life's too short to wear jeans and t-shirt every day and not try something new. After years of “studying” brand catalogues and fashion magazines (very religiously), I have a new-found perspective of the word “fashion” and also a handful of style icons to look up to, like Ines de la Fressange, Marion Cotillard and Clemence Poesy…
Needless to say, Parisian-chic has become one of my favourite styles, effortless, classy and very je ne sais quoi… But effortless doesn’t mean lazy, and classy doesn’t mean playing safe.
As your French Guide, I’m happy to show you the many looks (and where you can shop that look!) and outfit ideas so you can style yourself AND still look fabulously “frenchie” from head to toe. So consider the following fashion recipe your guidepost, and trust me, you won’t have the same regret as I do years later from looking at a horrible #TBT photo…
MONDAY - "boho-chic"
I know, I know. It’s the most dreadful day of the week… But, guys, don’t let Monday blue get to you. Instead, why not make it the most colorful, vibrant day of your week? Throw on some tribal prints and gypsy patterns. Something about the Bohemian style will make you feel free-spirited and colorful, especially on a blue Monday.
All you need is a flowy maxi dress, a pair of "out-in-the-wild" sandals and some beautiful accessories like earrings and rings, and definitely some bracelets and bangles as your arm-candies!
Not sure which accessories to get? Just go for anything that has turquoise and beads (two very Bohemian-themed elements) in it, then you're set!
TUESDAY - "preppy"
You don’t have to try hard to look smart and modest. Try on something classy and subtle, like the “prep school look”.
Patterns like stripes and checks definitely scream "intellect comes in style," like this checkered suit from Maje. Modish but not boring in the slightest way.
My other favourite go-to brand for this style is Lacoste for sure. You can never go wrong with an iconic polo - both shirt and dress - like this outfit. Pair it with a stylish tote bag and you're good to go!
WEDNESDAY - casual
The staple piece for a casual-chic look is - surprise, surprise - anything denim, basically. Denim jeans, denim overalls, denim jacket (you’ll know when it’s officially fall when you spot the first denim jacket on the street) and so on...
And if you're feeling *extra* bold and confident on that day, you can always pull a classic denim-on-denim look. Comfy, casual and laid-back.
THURSDAY - elegant
Elegance and sophistication do not mean dull and boring. Although chiffon and silk are two very popular fabric choices when it comes to a neat and classy look, you know what else looks less plain but equally classy? Lace definitely has my vote. Don't you just LOVE the details and the delicate touch that lace brings to an outfit? Like this two-tone lace dress from Sandro, girly, sweet and elegant.
Don’t forget to pick a few simple (less is more, remember?) blings to glam up your look. My favorite? Ofee, for sure. The brand currently has 16 fabulous collections of jewelries in different designs for different styles.
FRIDAY - sexy
FRIYAY means to let loose and have fun! Nothing spells T-G-I-F like a good Friday night party in an L-B-D (Little Black Dress - another must-have item in every girl's wardrobe). Wear something cute and easy to move around because there's going to be a lot of dancing (as expected in a GOOD Friday night-out).
Another TGIF Night-out essential is a quirky clutch - small enough to not burden the whole look, but big enough to hold your personal items and makeup.
For the final touch, spice up your outfit with this pair of ultra-feminine silhouettes. That shiny black leather and thin strap totally add an extra dash of chic to your look!
SATURDAY - urban
Bring some edges to your outfit to kickstart your weekend. Leather is a key player for the urban-chic style. Leather jacket, leather boots and leather beret... Consider the urban style the casual style but with a bit of extra effort, which means, instead of denim, make everything leather.
SUNDAY - "beachy"
SUNDAY FUNDAY! There’s no better way to enjoy a perfect summer weekend than spending a day on the beach and going home with sunkissed skin and sandy toes… And the first thing you need to pack is definitely an eye-catching swimsuit (which, by the way, should not be over-the-top sexy). I really love this ERES all-black one-piece because it looks classy and not too revealing. A total confidence booster, in my opinion.
And for those who have a “work-in-progress” summer body (like mine) and feel like a swimsuit is a wee-bit showy, you can always throw on a bright colored and festival-inspired beach kimono on top or go for a cute beach outfit that brings out your outdoorsy side! A straw hat is also a good idea under the sun, especially a stylish one with the Paisley print trim.
