Gordes means in French, a village hanging high in the air, which is the so-called “city in the sky”. It is located on one of the tops of the Vaucluse mountain range at an altitude of 635 meters. Gordes has a long history and has been since the time of the Roman Empire.
The entire city’s buildings are built using granite from local materials, forming a special landscape where houses, walls, and castles are all made of stone. The style is part of the Renaissance style that has been preserved from 1525 to the present day.
