意思是：“我不是傻瓜”

這句話只是找到了一種令人費解的方式來陳述顯而易見的事情：隨著年齡和經驗的增長，騙你變得越來越難。所以下次有人試圖以某種明顯的方式欺騙你時，用幻滅的語氣和你最好的鎮靜回答，作為一隻老猴子，你是面部模仿方面的專家。

“C’est pas à un vieux singe qu’on apprend à faire la grimace”

Literal: “You don’t teach an old monkey to grimace”

Meaning: “I’m not a fool”

This saying simply finds a convoluted way to state the obvious: as one gets older and experienced, it becomes harder to scam you. So next time someone tries to trick you in a somewhat obvious way, answer in a disillusioned tone and with your best composure, that as an old monkey you are an expert in facial mimics.

Another synonymous expression: Je ne suis pas né de la dernière pluie (I wasn’t born from the last rain).

“Stupid people dare to do anything, this is how we recognize them.”

This quote stems from an old (1963) French movie starring Lino Ventura, Bernard Blier, Francis Blanche, and Jean Lefebvre: Les Tontons Flingueurs (Crooks in Clover). Directed by Georges Lautner, and adapted from Albert Simonin’s book Grisbi or not grisbi, with dialogues of the legendary Michel Audiard, the movie acquired a cult status, and its dialogues have become popular sayings.

This particular quote is highly famous, and often used to mock stupidity: when someone does something which was obviously completely stupid, it is their trademark, the proof that they are idiots. Hence the quote: “Les cons ça ose tout, c’est même à ça qu’on les reconnait.”

L’arabe du futur, by Riad Sattouf @riadsattouf

This comic book is a massive hit in France, and has propelled its author, Riad Sattouf, to fame. The series is well received by the public and critics alike, and the first volume received the prestigious Fauve d’Or at the Angoulême International Comics Festival.

The series is autobiographical and tells the story of young Riad as he grows up in Muhammar Khadafi’s Libya and Hafez El Assad’s Syria. The story is narrated from the point his point of view as a child, with a salvatory degree of innocence and incomprehension towards the brutality he witnesses every day.
